Design of Building Systems Is Systematically Sequenced and Interdisciplinarily Coordinated

5.2 Mechanical Systems Design 5.2.1 Concept Design Phase 5.2.2 Schematic Design Phase 5.2.3 Design Development Phase

5.2.3 Design Development Phase

The mechanical design team develops system zoning, equipment layouts, and schematic diagrams for HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and fire suppression systems. Their scope in this phase includes:

  • Finalizing system types, zoning strategies, and preliminary equipment sizing
  • Developing duct, pipe, and riser layouts for each system based on architectural coordination
  • Refining shaft sizes, plant room allocations, and vertical distribution strategies
  • Performing energy and load calculations to validate system selections
  • Identifying control strategies and interface requirements with electrical and BMS systems

Mechanical consultants must ensure that systems meet comfort, safety, and code requirements, while fitting within the architectural and structural constraints.
