Design of Building Systems Is Systematically Sequenced and Interdisciplinarily Coordinated

5.2 Mechanical Systems Design 5.2.1 Concept Design Phase

5.2.1 Concept Design Phase

Mechanical engineers focus on defining the overall system strategies that will serve the building’s functional requirements. Their work involves:

  • Reviewing project typology, occupancy loads, and climate conditions to select suitable HVAC systems
  • Proposing conceptual zoning and ventilation approaches
  • Assessing space needs for plantrooms, shafts, mechanical risers, and service corridors
  • Identifying preliminary strategies for fire suppression, water supply, and drainage
  • Providing input on ceiling heights and coordination zones with architecture

Mechanical concept design ensures that the selected system types are spatially and technically feasible within the building form and project constraints.

Tasks
1.0 Analyze climate conditions and site constraints.
2.0 Perform preliminary HVAC and plumbing load estimation
3.0 Identify mechanical space requirements (shafts, plant rooms, mechanical floors).
4.0 Evaluate potential HVAC and plumbing system options (centralized vs decentralized).
5.0 Define sustainability strategies (passive cooling, water conservation, LEED/BREEAM compliance).
6.0 Coordinate with architectural/electrical teams for spatial planning and integration.
7.0 Assess utility availability and integration with existing infrastructure.
